Adjusting senses

How long is a country foreign? This question seems to be the point of departure for this magnificent and unique interweaving of writings on the ways in which one's foreignness is conceived until it becomes a new identity. Here, Houston is not only the landscape or the culture in which these changes take place, but a whole character, one that embodies the otherness, the mystery, the open and fascinating possibility of continuing to mutate. Undoubtedly a much-needed book.

This anthology, written in Spanish from the United States, is one more proof that language is not static, that it is malleable and that each author who composes this book understands it, masters it and uses it to give us 12 stories that delve into the long history of immigration. "Adjusting Senses: Ways to Fit in on Foreign Lands", aims to do just that: to create this universe that describes the intra-family relationships, their religions, their customs, their food, their ups and downs, their expectations and dificulties. All that and more is patented in a literary collage that also seeks to disentangle the problems, as well as the successes of what it is to live in exile.

The stories in this endearing anthology take us into an emotional and sensory kaleidoscope from which we do not emerge unscathed. And this is no accident. The authors of these stories write from the scars of their personal experiences as immigrants. Their characters and stories may be fictional, but the nostalgia, grief, hope, betrayal, and resignation are real. The six voices that challenge us with their different use of language, with their poetic and sometimes harsh language, put us in an uncomfortable state where we are forced to confront the losses we had hidden in a locked drawer.
