A Lua e Eu

In his practice Brazilian artist Paulo Nimer Pjota's (b. São José do Rio Preto, 1988; lives and works in São Paulo) remixes iconographies from pop culture and counterculture as well as art history. His large-format unframed canvases and metal panels feature tribal tattoos, advertisements from bodegas or luxury shops, graffiti tags, and cartoon characters and are often complemented by sculptures the artist places in front of them. By confronting mundane objects and references to archaeology and art history, Pjota critiques the inefficiency of the hierarchical epistemic systems that draw a divide between high and vernacular culture. The monograph A Lua e Eu (The Moon and I) presents Paulo Nimer Pjota's work of the past five

years, illustrating the artist's imposing montage practice. With contributions by Mateus Nunes and Gabi Ngcobo as well as a conversation between the artist and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Der brasilianische Künstler Paulo Nimer Pjota (geb. 1988 in São José do Rio Preto, Brasilien; lebt und arbeitet in São Paulo) remixt in seiner Praxis Ikonografien aus Pop- und Gegenkultur sowie der Kunstgeschichte. So tauchen auf den großformatigen, ungerahmten Leinwänden und Metallplatten Tribals, Reklamen von Kiosken oder Luxusshops sowie Graffiti-Tags und Comicfiguren auf, ergänzt von Skulpturen, die der Künstler davor platziert. Durch die Gegenüberstellung von Alltagsgegenständen und Referenzen aus der Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte kritisiert Pjota die Ineffizienz der hierarchischen Wissenssysteme, die Hoch- und Alltagskultur voneinander trennen.

Die Monografie A Lua e Eu (Der Mond und ich) präsentiert Paulo Nimer Pjotas Werke der letzten fünf Jahre und zeigt die eindrucksvolle Montagepraxis des Künstlers. Mit Beiträgen von Mateus Nunes und Gabi Ngcobo und einem Gespräch zwischen dem Künstler und Hans Ulrich Obrist.
